The Blue Profound

The Blue Profound

As an oil painter, I can create my own deeply romantic interpretations of weather patterns. Our age of constant watches, alerts, and Doppler radar strips the mystery of nature away, revealing the bones beneath the skin. Instead I see clouds and storms not as mere data points, but as living entities of the sky that breathe, evolve, and dissolve within vast currents of air. My paintings are hyper-visual interpretations of real weather systems. Rather than showing what a storm is supposed to look like, I try to evoke the actual feeling of an approaching storm — the charged smell of the air, that quick shiver of excitement, even though you know the weather’s about to turn rough. The sky is a never-ending, real-time, atmospheric-sized movie, complete with drama, heroes, villains, and shifting stories playing out across the globe. And since we can never predict it beyond a few days, it’s the perfect never-ending series.

I was inspired by Mark Akenside’s 18th-century poem The Pleasures of Imagination. Several paintings in the show take their titles directly from lines in this poem, and the exhibition itself is named The Blue Profound, also drawn from his work.
